The Shift

The floor crackled with electricity and the receiver pylons vibrated, humming, flexing the protective glass enclosure of the Shift Pad.
"Initialization complete. Attenuation Load established. We're green for phase 2, fluctuations within tolerance," the operator voice barked over the audible din of the Shift Pad, a golden glow growing from the staging area, spilling through the observation room windows.
"Phase 2 initiating. Wave-Channel Structure valid. Processing attenuation-wave data," the pleasant, yet mildly robotic voice chimed through the communication system. "Temporal data valid. Calculating High Band Mask."
"Shift Link Established," the disembodied voice finally chimed. "Horizon materializing in 3, 2, 1...," it counted.
As each count echoed through the communication system, the air charged and the glow of the staging area brightened to a blinding white, revealing at its core a misshapen plane, a hazy window to the Remote Shift Pad.
"Uploading atmospheric and telemetry data to prep-units, now," the operator beamed, "The Shift Pad is connected and ready for material transfer." But to where, they wondered? That was a job for the NOMAD.
The NOMAD stepped through the Horizon, tapped a small button on their wrist-mounted control unit and the Wave-Channel collapsed, the air calmed, and the glow disappeared.
The Shift Pad sat silent, the pylons intermittently crackling, grounding the remaining charge.
